What is TIFR GS Biology (JGEEBILS)?
The Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS), also called the TIFR Nationwide Entrance Examination for Biology, is a shared screening test used by premier research institutes across India for postgraduate and doctoral admissions.

JGEEBILS is a shared screening score, not a central admission portal
Registering for and sitting the TIFR GS Biology examination does not automatically submit applications to the consortium partners. While one TIFR application covers eligible TIFR centres selected in the form, candidates must submit separate applications to each non-TIFR institution they want to be considered by.
TIFR GS Biology Eligibility: Who can apply?
Three questions must be verified separately: whether you can register for the written test, whether your degree meets the programme's eligibility, and whether a specific non-TIFR partner has additional criteria.

Written-test registration rule:
TIFR's current admissions FAQ states that there is no age limit and no UG or PG percentage cutoff for registering for the TIFR entrance test. This does not cancel the qualifying degree requirements for the specific degree programme to which a candidate seeks admission.
Key degree completion and fellowship rules
- • The qualifying degree must be completed by the cycle-specific joining deadline stated in the official eligibility table (for GS-2027, that date is July 2027).
- • Final-year applicants must satisfy the qualifying-degree condition by the joining deadline and provide the required certified proof.
- • A candidate provisionally admitted without final degree proof does not receive a fellowship until the qualifying-degree proof is submitted. TIFR's current rule governs the arrears date.
- • Non-TIFR JGEEBILS partners publish their own programme eligibility. The TIFR table cannot be substituted for their institutional criteria.
- • The NCBS MSc Wildlife Biology and Conservation route is a separate programme with its own entrance examination and eligibility. It is not part of JGEEBILS.

TIFR GS Biology Exam Pattern: Structure and marking scheme
The December 2025 instructions and GS-2026 Biology paper provide the latest official structure: 60 MCQs across four distinct disciplinary areas followed by a 5-question subjective screening section.

MCQ Marks Architecture
The four area blocks in the latest paper (General, Physics, Chemistry and Biology) contained ten 1-mark questions and five 2-mark questions each, producing 80 possible MCQ marks. Every wrong MCQ was negatively marked.
Subjective Response Rule
Questions 61 to 65 form the subjective assessment. Candidates must answer exactly one of Q61-Q63 and answer both Q64 and Q65. While not assigned numerical marks in the latest instructions, responses are actively evaluated for applicant screening.

Accommodation and disbursement rules
- • TIFR provides hostel accommodation or House Rent Allowance (HRA) as applicable.
- • A provisionally admitted student does not receive the fellowship until proof of passing the qualifying degree is submitted.
- • If an I-PhD student takes an MSc exit option, the third-year fellowship is reduced to the first-year amount.
- • Non-TIFR consortium partners control their own institutional funding and fellowship guidelines.
Admission Process: From written test to institutional interviews
Qualifying the written examination is the first filter. TIFR and partner institutions evaluate candidates through structured secondary stages.
Step 1: Register and sit for the TIFR GS Biology written test
The examination is conducted as an online test at nationwide centres, usually on a Sunday in December.
Step 2: Obtain your score and check official shortlists
Each TIFR centre and participating non-TIFR partner assesses results independently and issues shortlists according to its own standards.
Step 3: Apply separately to chosen non-TIFR partner institutions
One TIFR application covers the relevant TIFR centres. Each non-TIFR partner requires a separate application submitted to that institution directly. Missing a partner deadline cannot be repaired by the JGEEBILS score alone.
Step 4: Submit later-stage materials if shortlisted
TIFR admissions guidance specifies that research write-ups, statement of purpose, and referee reports are required only after a candidate is shortlisted for the next stage. Requirements vary by subject and centre.
Step 5: Attend centre-specific selection rounds
Depending on the programme and centre, this may include one or two interview rounds and/or an in-person written test. Final decisions are made under the institution's current rules.

TIFR GS Cutoffs and Shortlisting Criteria
TIFR states that each Subject Board and each centre offering a programme has its own shortlisting criteria. These may include written-test marks, previous academic records, a submitted research write-up and recommendation letters at the appropriate stage.
How to evaluate interview shortlists and calls
• Centre autonomy: Non-TIFR consortium institutions use the JGEEBILS score independently, setting their own percentile or mark thresholds.
• No universal cutoff: A score discussed for one centre, programme, category or year should never be taken as a universal cutoff for another.
• Holistic evaluation: Many centres evaluate the candidate's full application, research experience and recommendation letters before issuing an interview call.
