IIT JAM Biotechnology (BT)
Everything You Need to Know - Syllabus, Pattern, Eligibility, Cutoffs, Strategy & Papers
Exam Overview
IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for Masters) is the gateway to M.Sc. programs at the Indian Institutes of Technology. It is a national-level entrance exam conducted annually by the IITs on a rotational basis, on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. For the 2026 cycle, IIT Bombay was the organizing institute.
JAM is conducted for seven subjects: Biotechnology (BT), Chemistry (CY), Economics (EN), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA), Mathematical Statistics (MS), and Physics (PH). This page focuses on the Biotechnology (BT) paper.
Key Facts at a Glance
Who Should Take This Exam?
For a B.Sc. Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or Zoology student, IIT JAM BT is the single most direct route to an M.Sc. at an IIT. No other exam gives you access to IIT M.Sc. Biotechnology seats. Not GATE (which leads to M.Tech, not M.Sc.), not CSIR NET (which is for PhD/fellowship), and not GAT-B (which covers DBT-supported universities, not IITs). The IIT M.Sc. is a two-year research-oriented program that provides exposure to cutting-edge laboratories.
IIT JAM BT vs other exams
JAM BT vs GATE BT: JAM leads to M.Sc. at IITs (research focus). GATE leads to M.Tech at IITs/NITs (engineering/industry focus). Many students appear for JAM first (after B.Sc.) and GATE later (during or after M.Sc.). JAM BT vs GAT-B: JAM gives you IITs. GAT-B gives you DBT-supported universities (JNU, BHU, HCU, IIT Indore, PGIMER, and ~75 others). Both have significant syllabus overlap and are prepared for simultaneously. JAM BT vs CUET PG: CUET PG gives you central universities (JNU, DU, BHU, etc.) for various M.Sc. programs. CUET PG is broader in scope but does not cover IITs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions? We've compiled the most common answers about IIT JAM Biotechnology (BT) details, patterns, and updates.
Yes. JAM BT does not require a specific degree in Biotechnology. Any candidate with a B.Sc. in any Science discipline (Life Sciences, Zoology, Botany, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or even Physics) is eligible, as long as they meet the general eligibility criteria. The exam tests Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics - not Biotechnology per se.
No. Negative marking applies only to Section A (MCQs). Section B (MSQs) and Section C (NATs) have no negative marking. However, Section B gives zero marks if your selection is not completely correct - there is no partial credit.
As of 2026, the primary IITs offering M.Sc. Biotechnology programs through JAM BT are IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee, IIT Indore, and IIT Dharwad. The total seat count across these IITs is approximately 88–114.
No. Unlike GATE (valid for 3 years), the JAM score is valid only for the admission cycle of the year in which you appeared. If you do not secure admission in the current cycle, you must reappear the following year.
Yes. JAM and GATE are separate exams with separate registrations. Many students in their final year of B.Sc. appear for JAM BT (for M.Sc. admission) and later appear for GATE (during M.Sc., for M.Tech/PhD/fellowship). In the same cycle, if JAM and GATE are on different dates, you can appear for both.
Significant overlap exists in the Biology portion - Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, and Microbiology are common to both. GAT-B does not have Physics and Math sections, which makes JAM BT slightly more interdisciplinary. If you prepare for JAM BT, you are largely ready for GAT-B.
Historically, IIT Bombay M.Sc. Biotechnology (General category) requires a rank within the top 30–50 in JOAPS counselling. For other categories, the rank range extends further. For a safe estimate, target 65–75+ marks (depending on paper difficulty) to be competitive for IIT Bombay.
The IIT M.Sc. is one of the strongest launchpads for a PhD, both in India and abroad. The two years give you research exposure through a mandatory dissertation, access to well-funded labs, and a credential that is recognized globally. Most IIT M.Sc. Biotechnology graduates who pursue a PhD are admitted to fully funded programs at top international universities.
IITs provide merit-cum-means scholarships to M.Sc. students, not a standard stipend like M.Tech. students receive. The financial support varies by IIT and year. Some IITs provide tuition fee waivers and monthly financial assistance based on family income. Additionally, if you qualify INSPIRE (DST) during your B.Sc., the INSPIRE fellowship continues during M.Sc. - this provides ₹80,000/year.
Yes. If JOAPS counselling does not result in an IIT admission, you can use your JAM score for admission at NITs and other institutes through CCMN counselling, which runs on a separate timeline and has a much larger pool of seats. IISc Bangalore also accepts JAM scores separately.
